Tula Michaelides brings over 16 years of experience in health communication, most recently providing communications and outreach support to a global USAID project on avian influenza, and to the development of private sector initiatives on avian influenza and pandemic planning. Her technical expertise includes strategy, campaign, and product development; public relations; training; monitoring and evaluation; and community outreach and advocacy in areas such as HIV/AIDS, infectious disease control, mental health, substance abuse, tobacco control, women’s health, emergency preparedness, bioterrorism, and injury prevention. Prior to joining AED, Tula worked on health education programs for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institutes of Health, including national campaigns on type 2 diabetes for the National Institute on Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), on addiction for the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA), and on vaccination and traumatic brain injury for the CDC. She also spent five years as a medical/science reporter, and several years as a health policy analyst and patient education advisor for a variety of pharmaceutical companies. Tula holds a Masters degree in Public Health from Johns Hopkins University, and is also a certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-B) and crisis counselor. A native Greek speaker, she also speaks Spanish and Russian.
