Nutrition
Known for its depth of experience and expertise in maternal and child nutrition, AED employs one of the largest teams of international nutrition experts outside academia. AED's technical experts provide global leadership in food security, infant and young child feeding, vitamin A and other micronutrient deficiencies, application of computer-based advocacy models for nutrition, infant feeding in the context of HIV, and nutritional care and support of people with HIV/AIDS. AED works with partners to integrate nutrition into the strategic planning process, develop nutrition guidelines and policies, apply a systematic behavior change approach in community-based nutrition programs, and improve program design and monitoring and evaluation.
Food Security
Food security encompasses availability of, access to, and utilization of food for a healthy and productive life. In its food security work, AED strives to ensure that: sufficient quantities of appropriate, diverse and nutritious food is consistently available to individuals or are in reasonable proximity to them; individuals have access to adequate incomes or other resources to purchase, barter, or grow - in order to obtain levels of appropriate nutrients needed for an adequate diet and nutritional level; and food is properly used by the person by ensuring proper food processing and storage practices, adequate knowledge and application of nutrition and child care, and adequate health and sanitation services. AED works with donor agencies and implementation groups to develop strategies and approaches to reduce food insecurity and vulnerability in emergency and development contexts. AED works for the integration of resources at the program level, including appropriate use of food aid to ensure that health and other programs have the maximum impact in terms of improved nutrition, health, and survival.
