In the summer of 2006, the AED Center for Global Health Communication and Marketing began working under a global task order to provide technical assistance on behavior change and communication activities related to avian influenza prevention, control and outbreak response in priority areas of the globe. Dubbed “AICOMM,” this project has built upon the work done under a previous task order that covered a trio of countries in Southeast Asia.

Through AI.COMM, AED is working with USAID missions, host governments (e.g., ministries of information, agriculture, health, trade, commerce), national Avian Influenza Task Forces (particularly the Communication Subcommittees), local and international NGOs, private sector organizations and donor organizations. AED staff work to bring all the stakeholders and partners together, including research, graphic artists, translators, and communication experts, to develop and design an effective prevention and outbreak communication plans, including timelines and procedures for implementation. Thus far, this approach has been implemented in Nigeria, Sudan, Niger, Democratic Republic of Congo, Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire and Burundi, with more being planned. The project has also developed a full menu of products that can be adapted for use worldwide, including an emergency communication tool kit, a series of job aids for animal and human health officials as well as farmers, an advocacy guide, media training modules and USAID commodities training modules that address the safe and effective use of personal protective equipment (PPE), decontamination supplies, and rapid diagnostic tests for both animals and humans.  All of these products are available for download on www.avianflu.aed.org.
