Uzbekistan: Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) Food Fortification Program (2005 - 2004)

The Uzbekistan GAIN program worked on fortifying wheat flour with micronutrients to reduce the prevalence of iron deficiency anemia in the population. Reducing anemia has a significant impact on maternal morbidity and mortality, birth weight, cognitive development in children, and adult labor productivity. AED's BCC Advisor Adrienne Karecki was a key team member for the World Bank and GAIN, visiting Uzbekistan to appraise the communications component of the newly-proposed GAIN grant of $2.265 million over three years. The communications component is a critical element that will greatly affect the success of the GAIN project and the reduction of anemia rates in Uzbekistan.
