The Story of a Successful Public-Private Partnership in Central America: Handwashing for Diarrheal Disease Prevention

A report detailing the successful handwashing promotion initiative that brought together soap companies, government ministries, non-governmental organizations, and the media in three Central American countries to prevent diarrheal disease. The countries experienced improvements in handwashing behavior associated with reductions in diarrheal disease, leveraging of significant additional resources for public health, and sustained involvement of private sector partners in public health promotion. The publication documents these results, describes the essential elements of a public-private partnership, discusses lessons learned from the experience in Central America, and outlines key steps for replication.
